General Information

 

Our department offers a unique and challenging graduate program of study and scholarly research leading to a Master of Science or to a Masters in Engineering Degree. The program has about 40 active students coming from several countries from around the world including Continental United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Ghana, and China. Students in the Masters of Science Engineering Program are required to complete 25 credit- hours of course work and also work on a thesis while those in the Master of Engineering Program are required to complete 28 credit- hours of course work and also work on a design or development project and write the corresponding report. Course offerings are scheduled to specialize students in one of the following concentrations: Machine Sciences Manufacturing Materials Sciences Thermal Sciences Students intending to pursue graduate studies should have a successful academic preparation in a mechanical engineering or its equivalent. Students are encouraged to complete their program of study in less than two years.

Facilities

   The Department has many research facilities including a State of the Art Solar Testing Facility, Structural Dynamics Laboratory, a sophisticated Instrumentation Laboratory, Heat and Mass Transfer Research Laboratory, a Mechanical Testing Facility, a -Laser Holography System and a Rapid Solidification Facility. Also, workstations for computer based applications and several computer based data acquisition and analysis systems are available. The Graduate Program encourages research and development in areas of interest to the engineering faculty and local industry, and federal and local governments.

Financial Aid

  Graduate students with high academic qualifications may be appointed as graduate assistants to aid in undergraduate instruction or in research. Funding from research projects sponsored by federal and state agencies and other scholarships are available. Typical support includes tuition waiver and a commensurate monthly stipend for 10 to 24 months subject to availability of funds and good progress of the student.

Application information

Graduate application forms are available from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Applicants must have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or its equivalent, with a GPA of 2.75 or greater. A working knowledge of both, English and Spanish is required. Complete applications must be submitted before February 15 for admission in the first (Fall) term, and on or before September 15 for the second (Spring) term. All credentials submitted by applicants become property of the University and cannot be returned. Other admission requirements are those of the University Graduate School.
