Dr. Nestor Pérez
Ph.D. Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho

Nestor Perez was born in Venezuela and left for the United States of America in October 1974 to pursue his education in engineering. He holds an Associate of Science Degree in Engineering (May 1979), a B.S. (May 1980) and M.S. (May 1983) in Metallurgical Engineering from Montana Tech and a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho (December 1989). Furthermore, Dr. Perez academic background varies from metallurgy to fracture mechanics. During his doctorate studies he conducted an interdisciplinary research in the fields of Material Characterization, Stress Corrosion Cracking, Fatigue, Fracture Mechanics and experimental Vibrations on rapidly solidified alloys (RSA).

Dr. Perez worked as an engineer for a few companies and has been a consultant in engineering conducting failure analysis of metallic structures. In fact, failure analysis of fractured structures is a private practice he still performs in a regular basis. In short, he has worked as a foundry engineer, field engineer in building metallic structures for an oil refinery and as a Surveyor for the American Bureau of Shipping.

Currently, Dr. Perez is a full professor at the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department of the University of Puerto Rico . He joined this department right after he obtained his Ph.D. in 1989 and has been here since then as a researcher and as a teacher. He has published a few important papers and two graduate level books titled “Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science” and “Fracture Mechanics.” These books have been distributed world wide by Kluwer Academic Publishers since 2004. Recently, he has finished editing these books for second edition publications. With respect to teaching, Dr. Perez teaches courses in Materials Science and Thermodynamics for undergraduates, and Fracture Mechanics and Corrosion for graduate students. In addition, Dr. Perez held the administrative position of Associate Director for seven years.

Lastly, Dr. Perez is also a professional musician and a song writer. He plays jazz guitar, composes music, sings, digitally records music at his home recording studio and performs jazz shows with his band at local clubs.
