Our Program

University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez

The University of Puerto Rico was founded in 1903 as a Land Grant Institution, and the Mayagüez Campus itself was founded in 1911 with the name of College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts with a graduate program being developed in 1957. The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) continues its development in the best tradition of a land grant institution. UPRM is a co-educational, bilingual, and non-sectarian school. It is comprised of the Colleges of Agriculture Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Engineering. The College of Agricultural Sciences encompasses the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Extension Service.

UPRM is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, of which it is a member since 1946. It is also a member of the Association of Hispanic-American Universities. In addition, the following programs are accredited by professional societies: Chemistry, by the American Chemical Society; Nursing, by the National League of Nursing; and in Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering, by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) has served the Hispanic community since 1967. Each semester we have new graduate students join our program. Our department offers a unique and challenging graduate program of study and scholarly research leading to a Master of Science or to a Master of Engineering Degree. The program has students from several countries from around the world including the Continental United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia, China, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ghana, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and Venezuela.

Specialty Areas

Applicants may choose from three specialty areas (must clearly state their interest in their essay):

•  Machine Sciences

•  Materials and Manufacturing Sciences

•  Thermal/Fluid Sciences

Students intending to pursue graduate studies should have a strong academic preparation in mechanical engineering or a related field.

Facilities

The Department has many research and educational facilities including a state of the art Structural Dynamics Laboratory, a Instrumentation Laboratory, Thermal Sciences Laboratory, Manufacturing Processes Laboratory, Special Projects Laboratory, Integrated Sensing Technology Laboratory, Biomicrofluidics Research Laboratory, Mechanical Testing Facility, and a Metallurgy Facility. Also, workstations for computer based applications and several computer based data acquisition and analysis systems are available. The ME Graduate Program encourages research and development in areas of interest to our faculty, local industry, and federal and local governmental agencies.

Graduate Studies Office

The Graduate Studies Office at UPRM is located in Monzón Building, on the third floor, Room 303, and their website is:

Students may pick up a copy of the Graduate Catalog of UPRM at the Office of Graduate Studies, with the latest information regarding the Graduate Policies and Procedures set by the university. If any information or answer to a question is not found in the UPRM Graduate Policies and Procedures or this website, then the desired information or answer should be sought by asking: your thesis advisor, the Coordinator of the ME Graduate Affairs Committee, the ME Department Head, or the Office of Graduate Studies, preferably in that order.

This website

We have developed this website to aid the Mechanical Engineering graduate students with the basic information to successfully complete their studies. It consists of the rules and procedures of the Mechanical Engineering Department, along with those of the Graduate School as found in the Graduate Catalog of UPRM. Please, be aware that all policies and procedures are subject to those written by the Office of Graduate Studies at UPRM. The Office of Graduate Studies has authority to change our policies and procedures at any time. However, the internal policies of the Mechanical Engineering Department override the policies of the Office of Graduate Studies whenever there is no conflict.
